Maasai children bask in the shade of a traditional cow-dung hut. The Maasai people do not eat chickens, but raise them for use in trade. The two staple elements in the Maasai diet are cow's milk and cow's blood. The latter is collected non-lethally by opening the animal's jugular, collecting a quantity of blood, and then clotting the wound with dust and grass. The cow, relatively unharmed, goes on its way to recover.
