To be a woman in Maasai society is no picnic; every day brings its share of hard labor. Women build the houses, haul the water, and perform many domestic chores, while little daily repetitive work is expected of the warriors (males between the ages of 15-25). I think that tourist visits may be a special occasion, one that brings festivity and a departure from the standard routine. Although the Maasai perform their chants/songs and dances many times a month for tourists, the villages are real; there is an expectation of privacy and certain boundaries in such a visit.
