This is Ole Kinante, a Maasai warrior. Ole was educated in the western fashion and gives presentations to tourists. I spoke with him at length, learning much about the border where traditional Maasai culture meets modern Kenyan society. It is not a restful border, since the demands of western society obviate almost every facet of Maasai life. The Maasai have no interest in international borders; they just know where the best grass is. Success in modern society demands education; for the Maasai, western education means exile from the tribe, family, and ageless traditional activities which connect them to their god.
