Desert Mirages
These images were taken during a drive from San Ignacio town to San Ignacio lagoon, a tooth-rattling drive over washboard dirt roads. This phenomenon creates the illusion of water, although I assure you there is not a drop of water for miles where these pictures were taken. Even though most of Baja is a desert, this one is struck me as particularly harsh. Throughout Baja, the desert is filled with life; you can find spiders, insects, birds, and of course, cactuses. Here, the sun-blasted salt pan is interrupted only by distant, unattainable cliffs, which give the appearance of a martian landscape. Fortunately, a few oases exist.
